In the figurative artworks of multidisciplinary artist Fanny Mesnard, characters, creatures, and hybrid whimsical landscapes are fashioned from repeated motifs and dreamlike colors. In her recent work, the artist translates the essence of the experience of dancing, as she integrates the moving body with the space it occupies as an invested territory. The refined artworks of Mesnard, combining painting, drawing, silkscreen, and ceramic sculpture, challenge our relation to the world, all the while smoothly representing an uncertain yet attractive imaginary. These curious blends of organisms create a unique theatre inhabited by fabricated characters, immersing us in a universe that reminds us of the candor of a young imagination, but illustrated by the singular aesthetic vocabulary of this contemporary artist.
Fanny Mesnard is a multidisciplinary artist from France (Angoulême) and is now based in Quebec City since 2008. She has a License in fine arts from the Université Paris VIII / Saint-Denis (2002), a Masters of the Université d’Aix-Marseille (2004), and a Diplôme National Supérieur d’Études Plastiques of the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Marseille (2004). On her arrival in Quebec, she started a Doctorate in Études et pratiques des arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal (2014) and multiple trainings in ceramic sculpting at the École des Métiers d’art de Québec. For public art (1%), she already created a dozen of permanent or temporary artworks in the United States and Quebec from 2018 to 2022. She is the recipient of many grants in creative research since 2010. She is presently a member of the Table des arts visuels du Conseil de la Culture (Quebec and Chaudière-Appalaches regions), and of the VU (Quebec) and Regart (Lévis) centers. Her artworks were presented in more than 24 solo and group exhibitions, including recently at the Salle Alfred Pellan of the Maison des arts de Laval in 2021.
