Sylvie CHARTRAND

Sylvie Chartrand is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work stands between the representation of the body and the body in representation. The artist uses video recording and digital retouching that she then prints on paper to explore ambiguous forms and mysterious shadows freeing themselves from the human body. In the photographic artworks of Chartrand, humanity is evocated, fleeting and translucid, through fascinating and soft impressions of beings segmented by fixed movements, timeless, free and light.

Sylvie Chartrand works and lives in Montreal since she moved from Repentigny in 1998. She is a recipient of a PhD in Études et pratiques des arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (2018) and a master’s degree from the Studio national des arts contemporains Le Fresnoy (2002). She is also trained in corporal play at Omnibus Le corps du théâtre, where she performs and teaches since 2004. Her artworks come in various forms: photo series, video installations, performed installations and small theatrical forms. They have been presented in international exhibitions such as Le Rêve des Formes at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2017), Temps d’images at l’Usine C de Montréal (2008) and Territoires de l’image at the Musée des beaux-arts de Tourcoing (2007), as well as in large events such as the Ars Electronica of Linz (2018), the Festival International du Mime de Montréal (2008), les Rencontres VIA de Mons (2007), the Festival Mondial des théâtres de marionettes de Charleville-Mézières (2006) and the Monaco Dance Forum of Monte-Carlo (2002). Her artworks are part of the collection of the city of Saint-Lambert and of many private collections across Canada.
